A flexible, lightweight voter guide application built to cover local elections largely ignored by mainstream news organizations. Launched in 2024 covering Maryland School Board Elections, with a second iteration covering the Maryland General Assembly now live — and more planned. The application is built on Svelte and Datasette, running on just a few dozen lines of code, making it easy to adapt for new elections. Data collection is handled by students, and a student-developed script formats the data for the application.
My role was lead developer and project manager. I designed and built the application framework, prepared the codebase for new elections and coordinated with the Local News Network throughout. This year I developed an open-source version of the application with full documentation so any newsroom with basic technical skills can adopt the method — and presented the project at NICAR 2026.
