The “Off the Rails” project by the Howard Center for Investigative Journalism is a 2025 investigative series exposing lax safety regulations, inadequate inspection, and high risks in the North American rail industry. It highlights how powerful lobbyists and self-regulation have allowed dangerous, under-inspected trains to operate, following the 2023 East Palestine, Ohio, disaster.
