Hello! I am a data journalist, designer and senior lecturer at The Philip Merrill College of Journalism at The University of Maryland.
I previously worked at The Baltimore Sun, where I was the senior editor of data and graphics. In 2018, I joined the faculty at the University of Maryland’s Philip Merrill College of Journalism, where I direct the data and graphics bureau of Capital News Service and teach data journalism and visual design courses.
I’ve been a top editor on many impactful journalism projects at Merrill. That includes “Printing Hate,” winner of the News Leaders Association’s 2022 Punch Sulzberger Innovator of the Year Award, which explored the racist past of white-owned newspapers; and “Code Red: Baltimore’s Climate Divide,” winner of the National Press Foundation’s 2019 Innovative Storytelling Award, which examined the relationship between climate change and poverty.
I was also lucky enough to be part of a team nominated as Pulitzer Prize finalists in 2015 for their work on the death of Freddie Gray at the hands of Baltimore police.
I live in Baltimore City (and, yes, I love it here!). Contact me at adamATadammarton.com.
